Folks,
In an effort to carry forward the legacy of Mohit we have planned to get a book dedicated to Mohit published. This would be a book which would be a compilation of short stories written by various authors on real/fictional events highlighting instances of heroism, valor, courage and one's love for the nation. I have had discussions with some authors who have come forward to donate their stories for this noble cause and I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart but we would need more.
In an effort to use the network of people here on this community, and all for the common cause, I would like to extend the request to you all as well to search and connect me to those people who can contribute. Needless to say that this would need to be a donation from their side since we wont have any remuneration except the copy of the book for them with our heartfelt thanks.
I am pasting one of the email I sent out to prospective contributors in case you would like to take a leaf from it and make a call yourself across your networks.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings!

I am the elder brother of Major Mohit Sharma, AC, SM, COASM who made the supreme sacrifice fighting Pak infiltrators, killing five of them and trying to save his comrades lives on 21st March 2009 at a young age of 31 years. He was awarded the Ashok Chakra, highest peace time gallantry award for his valor and patriotism on 26th January 2010 posthumously.

It is sad but true that there are very few people in the government or in the society who come out and help carry the legacy of these soldiers forward to help the next generation to imbibe values of nationalism and love for the country and it is left to the soldiers' near and dear ones to take on the responsibility.

In an effort to try and carry the legacy which Mohit has left behind and the hope to create some space in the hearts and minds of our children there is a request I would like to make to you.

There is some news and information I would like to share with people here.
There is an organisation which calls itself "Citizens For Forces" and they have painstakingly organised "Vijay Divas" commemoration on the 26th of July all over India which includes not only Delhi but also Hyderabad and Surat.
The plan is also to have international exposure to this cause and bring about a lot of awareness to the people of India who sometimes I feel (purely my personal opinion) are ridden with the "Chalta hai" attitude and dont care about anything else but themselves.
There are people who would say to themselves "Thank God I am safe" when a terrorist attack happens and people lose their lives completely oblivious to the fact that there have been soldiers who put in their life in the line of fire to make sure they are alive to say those words as well as that terrorists dont confine themselves to a place or a region and they could be next.
Anyways, I guess I have blabbed a lot about my personal feelings and it is now time to request your attention towards these events happening across the country and the world.

DELHI INVITE: Children's Park, Shahjahan Road, India Gate: 1800 hrs to 2030 hrs
HYDERABAD INVITE: People's Plaza, Necklace Road. 1800 hrs to 2030 hrs

Los Angeles Invite: 28th July,7:00am at Infront of University Religious Center Fishbowl Chapel, University of Southern California.

Siddharth's Indian Kitchen at 3 PM

We at "Citizens for Forces" would like to take this opportuinity to introduce ourselves as a youth organisation working towards creating awareness towards the significance of the Indian Armed Forces and the sacrifices that our soldiers make in any calamity like war, natural disasters or nowadays even acts of terrorism.

We are dedicated towards creating awareness in the public about the issues the forces like Army, Navy, Air Force, Paramilitary force BSF, Coast Guard, NSG as well as Police force face as well as create a sense of patriotism and national belongingness in the young and old alike.
We have been functional since last three years, and have every year since organised a march in support of the martyrs of the Kargil war on Vijay Diwas on 26th July. This year on this date our volunteers will gather worldwide in Vancouver, Auckland, Los angeles, and Melbourne and in India at Nagpur, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Surat, to pay tribute to the soldiers who yet again saved our national pride at Kargil.
In Delhi we will be joined by BHAGAT SINGH KRANTI SENA, PANUN KASHMIR, AZAD SEWA DAL, DELHI UNIVERSITY STUDENT UNION and INDIAN EX-SERVICEMEN MOVEMENT. We would request you all to join us on this very occasion and bless our volunteers with your presence.

Please push it across through all channels to make the cause successful.

I have taken a long time to come back and start to write again to this blog. Well, I have no excuses and admit that I didn't try hard enough to do this.

We came up with the renewed website after a lot of effort. The effort was not only in pulling in the people to do it but also generate the list of things that make the website. We had to go through a lot of his photographs and scan them. Broadcast requests to people to send us any/all pics they might have had of Mohit and I am glad to put it here that there were people who came back to us.

Switching topics, I had in one of my initial posts mentioned about how Mohit picked up the mouth organ one fine day and spent around 12 hours flat learning it himself. Mind you, he did it without no formal training in music but only relentless efforts into trying to catch the sounds it made when you puff into it at various places and when you pull in. As you can see I can't even explain how he did it so it can be an assumed fact that it is dramatically difficult for one to learn it himself.

When he came to the room I was sleeping in, it was around 0200 hrs in the night and we had to go to school early next morning. Still he was adamant he showed me his skills on the mouth organ and what he did was amazing enough to keep me interested and awake till our mom came into the room with our glasses of milk to ask us to get ready for school.
The following is what clearly reminds me of that night and I hope it shall kindle a sense of closeness to Mohit once you listen to the entire song sung by the legendary Hemant Kumar. Just pay attention to the mouth organ.

As promised, another of his pic (side profile).

Mohit's 33rd Birthday

Today as we celebrate Lohri and plan for Makar Sankrant I would like to wish Mohit, our Chintu, a very blessed soul on his birthday.
I have been getting calls and messages since the people started reading the newspapers today and have been overwhelmed with the solidarity people have shown towards the proud family.
Thank you all for the kind support which is needed as the family takes the next step in carrying on the legacy by announcing the creation of a trust in his name to serve the country and its people through various programmes. The trust is named "Major Mohit Sharma Ashok Chakra, Sena Medal, Memorial Trust"

His journey to the National Defence Academy

I know I am guilty of keeping you all waiting for such a long time for the next post and I am really sorry for that. I would say I had my reasons but they dont matter as I understood from a quote from Deepak Chopra, a spiritual guru who said in one of his articles that
if you miss on things that you wanted to do on a particular day/time then may be it wasnt so important for you. The motivation and commitment comes from within and has no parallels

The above summary of the article also forms the basis of Mohit's passion for the forces. There was no other job he wanted to do. It had to be NDA.

Mohit passed out from DPS Ghaziabad in 1995. He had a pretty good overall percentage, 82% which in those times, was a very high standard grade and he could have gotten admission in any college in DU or where he wanted but his eyes were set somewhere else.

I must confess, people coming from a non-defence background do not know much about the forces and the way of life there and the path to take to be a part of them but Mohit was crystal in his thoughts.

Mohit wrote his NDA written exam sometime in April 1995, NDA exams happen twice in an year but giving the one in December would mean Mohit would lose out on 6 months seniority in case he got selected, which for some reasons he was pretty sure of.
The results take some time to come and as any family would, my parents forced him to take admission in an Engineering college in Amravati University, Sant Gajanan Maharaj College of Engineering and Technology, Shegaon along with one of his best friends Ankush. Both of these guys were packed off to Shegaon where they started their course in Electronics and Communications.

Mohit was not keen no engineering and thus he would always call up home to enquire if any communication came in from the UPSC who conducts these exams. Our answer was negative till in July-August we got a letter from UPSC that Mohit had cleared the exam and was supposed to report to Bhopal for his Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. This obviously was a great surprise to us since my parents were more keen on having Mohit finish his engineering and take the path which I had taken, although I had 2 failed SSBs to add to my resume :-)

Papa called up Mohit and told him that he had cleared the exams and he was to report to Bhopal but also made it clear that the family wanted him to continue his engineering and forget about the forces. My dad and mom were pretty strong about this intention and Mohit was categorically told to forget about NDA.
Well, Mohit was not someone who could be told what needs to be done and how, even at the age of 17 his thoughts and ambitions did not seem to get affected by anyone even if they were his parents.

Sometime in September 1995, Mohit asked the letter to be sent to him without revealing his intentions and Papa unknowingly sent it across to Shegaon. Now, Mohit armed with the call letter got his bags packed and got a ticket to Bhopal which was not very far from Nagpur, the nearest station from his college. He called us up from the station and told us that he is off to Bhopal for 5 days for his SSB and we were speechless. We wished him luck but somewhere deep down in our sub conscience we didnt want him to join the forces. Well that proved to be just a unjust hope in the end.

After 5 days we got an excited, elated and obviously very happy Mohit calling up and telling he had cleared the SSB and has been recommended for the forces by the board. Since he was suffering from Jaundice and was underweight he has been temporarily rejected in the Medical and has been given 1 month time to recover and report to the Delhi Cantonment Army Hospital for re-examination else he shall be rejected and will need to comeback after 6 months to the medical board.

Mohit didnt want to waste any time and he was pretty clear that it is now that he would like to join NDA else he shall be 6 months junior to the guys he gave the exams with and would not like to go that way. Such clarity of thoughts as 17 years.

Mohit came back home and consulted family members who were doctors and found out the way to reduce Jaundice levels to acceptable limits and increase weight in 1 month flat. I am not sure how many people would believe but Mohit used to have a dozen bananas with half a litre of milk in his breakfast. Another dozen bananas thru out the day and would munch on Paneer for the rest of the day. To ensure he was fit he would cycle down from our house in Sahibabad to Ghaziabad and sometimes even to places in Delhi just to make sure he has the stamina and fitness to go thru.

The more astoundingly unbeleviable part is that Mohit increased 6 Kgs in 1 month and was ready for his medical board examination.

I guess when God almighty sees such passion and commitment he relents as well and Mohit got thru the medical and got his joining orders to report to NDA in January 1996.

I still remember Mohit's reaction then, it was not even closed to excited as kids of his age would. There was a certain calmness which showed sublime but exuberant confidence levels, as if he knew that was what was going to happen and he knew it all the way.

Mohit never went back to Shegaon, not even to collect his stuff or get a TC or even his caution money, Papa was assigned this task and he had no choice.
From then on Mohit lived like a Maharaja and waited eagerly to join his dream destination, feeling victorious by doing what no one in his entire extended family dreamt of doing themselves (including me) or expected Mohit to do.

The rest as they say is proverbial history, some accounts which I have, I shall share in due time.

Till then its hats off to this man, the only "man" I have till now known in my life.

The Freedom struggle is still on, lest you forget

Not sure though why I chose this title but it seems there have been a lot of times when I have felt that I am not feeling free. We all know and even boast that India got its independence on 15' Aug 1947 and we have been called a free country ever since but what has been the longest period when we have felt free from the dangers of war whether from our neighbours or from within or our within.
Starting right from the tribal attacks in Kashmir in 1948 the having the 61 and 65 war, then the 71 war, the Punjab insurgency and the "very old and recent and never ending" Kashmir insurgency. Not to forget the frequent forgotten squirmishes in between and very recently China walking across our borders and painting the country red. Add to it the Naxalite saga which stil continues to haunt us so badly that when we hear that AP's CM's chopper vanished and we couldnt locate it we start thinking about the naxals in the jungle over which the helicopter was flying and what they would have done had they got hold of the CM.
I am not sure I have been able to ring a bell. Well the intention was not so too. The idea was to start the thought process and not conclude that it is a fact that we are not free. We all are still living under fear, fear of bombs, fear of the designs of our neighbouring country, naxals, insurgents, maoists, religous fanatics and our evil within. So when we are not so free and people who fight for making us forget all these pains and worries should be treated at par with freedom fighters.
We have already lost such a lot of young talented officers like Hrishikesh Ramani, Amit Singh, Mohit Sharma, Vikram Batra and all of the Naiks, Subedars, JCOs, NCOs, Jawans, Officers and even the porters, guides, informers etc who in a way play a part in finishing the menace that the fear, which I wrote an essay on, has caused in our lives.
I'll leave you thinking now and even rubbishing my thoughts with Mohit's pic with the object of his desire, the Royal Enfield Bullet.

Link to the news on Sqn Ldr. Ritin Jain

http://diamondpilots.blogspot.com/2009/07/two-instructors-killed-in-hpt-32.html

News about Ritin Jain

Just wanted to share another sad news about the demise of Ritin Jain, he was a flight instructor in Hyderabad and Mohit's course mate. Ritin's plane crashed while making a landing at the Flight Training School during a sortie.
I remember him very clearly having shared a lot of his Will's Navycut during the passing out days as well as when I went to meet Mohit in Khadakvasla in 1997. He was a true gentleman and great person to be friends with. God bless him and he rests in peace.
I am trying to look for more details and would post the link soon.

4 months and counting

It is the 21'st, 4 months since you became immortal, since you took your positions next to the Gods, idols we worship and pray for inspiration and motivation. Your nieces, Chiya and Peehu always think about you and wait for you hoping you would be coming during your holidays, looking towards the sky each night, trying to find you in the brightest of shining stars and waving to you, calling you and waiting for an answer. I know you are there for them, every time they look towards the skies, everytime they say the word chacha and think about you. God bless you.

Little bit of MJ in MS

By now it is common news about Michael Jackson's leaving us and his journey to the heavenly abode. It is also normal to assume that Mohit like a lot of other people was a great fan of MJ and as everything else in Mohit's life this also has a small story attached to it.
Mohit was hooked to MJ by a common friend, a classmate of mine who came in from London to India due to relocation and was studying in our school. I borrowed a cassette from him which was the first album Mohit ever heard of MJ, and it was "BAD". It is a different story then Mohit went on to buy Thriller, History, Dangerous etc but his all time favourite was "Smooth criminal" much similar to his own persona. The story is not only about how he got addicted to MJ but how he memorised the lyrics.
In those times it was difficult to understand MJ, specially for us since we were new to his vocabulary and it took us a lot of time to understand what he was singing.
Mohit went to GK for some shopping with Mom and Dad and somehow got his hands on a handbook having all the lyrics of MJ's album BAD. It was then he memorised his songs and started to learn his dance steps. He learnt the moon walk, the gyrations, the cap roll etc and became a hit with the family.
At all family gatherings people would request him to dance on MJ's tracks and he always obliged.
MJ was very close to Mohit's heart his entire life, although lately he stared to feel a but detatched with MJ's music which was not so forthcoming and ventured into Metal starting off with Aerosmith, Metallica and GnR and going on to patronize Roger Waters, Jimi Hendrix, joe Satriani and thier likes.

God bless MJ and Mohit, RIP.

As always shall leave you guys with one of Mohit's pics, memories which I cherish since I was there in person looking at Mohit with my two ever so lucky eyes.

Shahid Major Mohit Sharma Marg

The efforts to get a memorial in the name of Martyr Major Mohit Sharma are on, we have been following authorities personally as well as writing letters to them to get a road in the hometown named after Mohit. Bureaucratic delays or plain apathy towards people's contribution towards their motherland, which ever term gets used here the hard fact is that authorities seem to be taking a long long time.....
Nevertheless the efforts would continue...
I shall soon be uploading the letters we have been writing to the authorities which seem to have no effect till now but hopefully we shall soon see some light at the end of this bureaucratic dark tunnel.

Another Hero makes the supreme sacrifice for the nation

Its not even 3 months since Mohit left us and we have got the news of another brave soldier "Major Hrishikesh Ramani" making the supreme sacrifice defending the borders of the nation and protecting its sovereignity. Major Ramani was just 26 years old and was about to get married soon.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Ahmedabad/City-lad-returns-home-a-martyr-/articleshow/4633173.cms

The pain is unbearable, the void perennial, the trauma inexplicable but no one would have an explanation so to why we keep on losing such heroes like this. A question would alway remain, how many more sacrifices will the country need to realise and how much the families will suffer before our rulers think differently.

The memories remain and so do the questions.

Chain snatching incident

I know I have been very late in putting this feed up for Mohit's friends and also that the title of this post would start to think as if there was a chain snatching incident that happened and how was Mohit involved in it. Well yes, the incident was chain snatching one but the chain I am talking about here was a bicycle chain :-)

Although there were a lot of events which happened during the course of his school but this one stands remarkably out due to the fact that there was a lot of outsider role involved and I'll try and tell you how.

It was summer time and it was when Mohit was in his 11th standard and his likings towards some girls came to be known to me. The school bus, and people might remember it was a big Blue coloured bus with Mohan Meakins written on it, entered the Mohan Nagar factory compound to drop the kids who used to come to the school from the staff quarters. At that time 3 boys got on to the bus and one of them was an rank outsider who was completely unknown to me, Mohit, Dhruv and all the other folks who would continue their journey to Sahibabad to be eventually dropped. I was standing between 2 rear seats and the three boys starting approaching us. One of them whose name I later got to know was called Ram. He asked me who was Mohit and suddenly I realised something was wrong and I refused that Mohit is not here. The other two boys who were residents of Mohan nagar, one of them was called Ranju, shouted from the behind and identified Mohit. Suddenly the entire scene changed and Mohit, me and Dhruv got cornered stuck inside the 2 rear seats coming under blows from these insiders assisted infiltrators.
What followed took me completely by surprise. Mohit took out a bicycle chain from his school bag and what ensued stung the so called perpetrators. I wouldnt name but one of them got hurt and suddenly Ranju became the interlocutor and proposed to stop the fight and ave a compromise. But by then the driver and conductor of the bus looking at the ferocity of the fight had stopped the bus and we all were taken to the transport manager's, Betu's Papa's office. It was here that Mohit's bicycle chain was snatched and hence the name of the post :-)

Now the one question you might be thinking about and I too asked Mohit was how on earth the cycle chain came into his bag. He told us that he knoew something like this might happen and he was prepared for it by buying a second hand chain from a cycle theek karne waala on the street for Rs 10.
All of this battle was fought since a girl in MN started to get interested in Mohit's friendship and one of the boys was her alleged former BF.

Okay, so at the end of the story I am asking myself what was about Mohit I was hoping to tell folks thru this post?
Well it is the brave instincts which he had and the determination to do things even if it meant going alone else how would you fathom a school kid coming prepared in the school bus with a cycle chain and not telling his bro and his friends that he was expecting some guests.

I have been putting one or the other Mohit's pic in each of my post and I'll do so today too and hope that you all wouldnt relate it to the incident I just posted.

Favourite hair style

Lot of people would remember the kind of hairstyle Mohit had but only few of us would rememeber what it used to be for most part of his school days. Till about his 9'th standard Mohit used to have rigid, strong hair much like his own attitude towards a lot of things which some people would also funnily term as the "Sadhana Cut" in rememberence of the famous beautiful actress of good old times Sadhana( the herione of Arzoo ) if you remember. I am pasting Mohit's pic which would remind most of you of the kind of hair he had. Note that this one is the same one which I posted highlighting his singing capabilities.

It was this time in 1991/92 when this movie "Aashiqui" was released and suddenly Rahul Roy became a house hold name and a craze amongst the feminine population of not only the school but also the country. Well this was something that Mohit didnt like, girls being crazy for a 1 film wonder. Mohit was one go getter, he never thought any thing in this world was impossible. He meant the same for his hairstyle too. Some people thought it was impossible for Mohit to change his hairstyle from what it was "Sadhana Cut" to "Rahul Roy"'s style and challenges were what kept him fired up.
One fine Sunday,I remember, he took off on his Hero Ranger cycle and told us that he was going to get his hairstyle changed, come what may. Well, we all beleived that it would be one more futile attempt by Mohit to get his hair style changed which will return back to his normal "Sadhana Cut" style in a few days but he had other designs in his mind. When he reached back home the entire family was shocked to see Mohit had got his head shaved off but for a beautiful "bodi" or a "choti" more symbolic to pandits on his head. The reason he charmimgly gave all of us was that it was summers and he had a lot of dandruff which he wanted to remove.
The actual reasons which a lot of people would not know what the heated discussion which went on between him and the barber who looking at Mohit's hair said that nothing can change his hairstyle which Mohit took as a challenge and shaved off his head. It was after this that he started the oiling of his hair every day and I distinctly remember that when Mohit's hair became just long enough to hold them in one's hand he started using my Mom's clips to hold them back in a way he wanted them to grow. He would use clips and a lot of oil and put on a baseball cap while sleeping to make sure his hair grew in the right direction. This happened for months. When ever he felt dissatisfied with his hair he got it shaved off and retarted the entire exercise again.
Most of us including me used to laugh at him and make fun of his perserverence but the pic I'll paste now would show the starking difference in his hair style to people.

People might find the incident funny but I guess the attitude towards life which Mohit had, always showed how strong he was in his ambitions and the extent he could go to fulfill them. It is our country's and its people's fortune that they were the ones he wanted to serve in the way he did.
Hopefully this will inspire people and remind them of what one is capable of, if one has the will and the right intentions.

A poem on Mohit by her sister

I know you all would be waiting for the next one on Mohit's school time adventures but this is something I couldnt resist putting in here before I write something else.
This is one great poem which Mohit's cousin sister wrote for him almost impromptu and narrated in front of hundreds of people. The way she has described the emotions of a mother who lost her son for the country are exemplary. She wept and recited this poem and made even the strongest of hearted people including the ones from the forces as well as politicians marking their attendance cry.
This is a scanned copy so please fogive me for the resolution but hopefully by the time you have gone thru it all you would have forgiven me for my haste....

Unforgettable school days...., as I remember 1 by 1

I'll try and narrate some instances which happened after I had passed out and
he was in 12'th standard.
At that time 1994-95 the school principal was Dr. R.D Thakur and one fine morning Mohit told us that he didnt have to goto school for 3 days. Well as any parent would my parents asked him what was the reason for not going to the school for 3 days and he started giving different reasons starting with that its better to study at home for the exams than go to school where most of the students are taking time off to study for their exams to being unwell. After a lot of coaxing we found out that there had been an event in the school where one of the 12'th class student has been roughed up by a group of students due to which they had been suspended from the school. Mohit was also one of them to be suspended. The others were, if I remember correctly, Piyush and Ankush. Well then all the deliberations started to happen and all the parents reached the school and met the Principal. He was detailed on the reasons and the sequence of events after it was found that the reasons for Mohit and his friends to retaliate were justified but the way in which they did was not so finally they all patched up with the so called "victim", the name of whom I know but is being withheld and all of them resumed school.
Well people would start to think Mohit was notorious and I dont admonish them for thining that way. I and most of his friends would agree that Mohit was notoriously just and hot blooded. He wouldnt tolerate people throwing weight around and bullying people in the school. This is also one of the reasons he had almost the entire school knowing him and considering him as their friend.
It obviously makes it all the more reasons for all the teachers at that time teaching in the school to remember so called "notorious" guys like him and some of them are serving in the school even today in various capacities.

I did write something about his skills with the instruments and it seems as if the GOD almighty read this and when I was coming to the office I could hear the RJ playing the song "Hai apna dil to awaara" by Hemant Kumar.

Coming back to his musical skills I am sure after you see the following picture you would know that he had this quality of starting early. Not only he was good at playing instruments but he also was a great singer. He sung a lot of songs in school competitions as well as family functions and kept on adding to the list of his admirers. His favourite composer/singer was the great Hemant Kumar, not sure how many people of his age know this name but for those who do it is a known fact that the command he had over voice modulation is unmatched even today and our Mohit used to sing all his songs starting from "Hai apna dil" to "Lehron pe leher".

Shaheed Major Mohit Sharma's, probably one of his last live performances

This and one more which I am uploading one are vidoes which were shot somewhere in Kashmir Valley showing one of the many facets of Mohit's personality. A true warrior he was and we all know about him that way but music was also one of his bigger interests in life. Starting off in school with the harmonium from his music teacher Dr. S.D. Sharma,he went on to master many other instruments which included the mouth organ, keyboards, tabla and all variants of the guitar.

He loved to play Hemant Kumar's "Hai apna dil to awaara" on the mouth organ and with the same ease and elan could play hotel california on the guitar. He never thought he couldnt play any instrument. If one dared to say that a instrument is difficult to play he would make sure he mastered in a way that he could give a live performance on it and even play tunes on public demand.

The next video is a continuation of his performance.
